Embodied Intuition for Deep Connection

A somatic practice rooted in tantric and shamanic traditions. Learning to listen to the vast intelligence moving through and around us, and to receive information the body has always been capable of holding.

Where Does a Thought Come From?

As I type these words, my somatic experience is one of my fingers moving and words appearing. Had I grown up within a society that believed in spirits and possession, I could easily make sense of this experience as one of channelling — the origin and expression of these words having nothing to do with me. However, because I have grown up within an individualistic society, I make sense of this somatic experience as my words: I feel I created them.

Where does a thought emerge from? It seems to simply appear in my mind. When does the constellation of bones, heart, intestine, brain stop being simply organs and start being me? When does the food I eat, or the ideas I read, become part of who I am?

Many traditions have believed for millennia that we emerge from the relationships within which we swim. It is the relationship of my bones, flesh and organs, parents, grandparents, ancestors, food, plants, animals, friends, community, societies, histories — that means I exist as who I am now.

All Life Is Intelligent

All life is self-aware in some form and to some degree intelligent. Even a cell recognises itself as separate from everything else and has memory and intelligence enough to navigate the circumstances it is in and work with other cells.

This is the case for all life, be it in physical form, such as cells, body parts, stones, trees or the earth itself or energetic form, such as a group, community, weather systems, ideas, emotions, parts of ourselves or ancestors.

For those who need these ideas explained in scientific rather than spiritual language, I recommend exploring the work and experiments of Michael Levin, microbiologist.

What Is Embodied Intuition?

Embodied Intuition is the practice drawn from tantric and shamanic traditions of learning to listen to the information we are receiving all of the time from the seas of intelligent Beings we emerge from, swim within, and are entangled and live in relationship with.

Embodied Intuition understands that it is through the body that we can connect and listen to other forms of intelligence. It is a path that supports us to begin to notice, value and interpret somatic information, such as senses, sensations, impulses, dreams, visions and knowings. It is a practice that supports us to begin to interpret and incorporate this information so we can work with the mind towards shared, ethical, relational purpose.

The Difference Between Gut Feeling and True Intuition

Embodied Intuition also understands that those of us who have grown up in the Global North and experienced trauma have work to do before we can awaken our Intuitive Capacities.

We must learn to sense the difference between our ‘gut feeling’ — which is our subconscious scanning for similarities between our current situation and past experiences from our own lives, and is often looking out for signs of threat — and Embodied Intuition, which takes practice, requires the body to be regulated, and opens us up to information from outside our own experience.

Preparing the Body:The Foundation of Embodied Energetics

Perhaps even more importantly, for many of us, our bodies are numb and we are, to one degree or another, dissociated. Before we can receive information through the body, we must prepare the body.

We do this by releasing the blocks that prevent our life energy from circulating, increasing our capacity to feel and move emotion, and developing our sensitivity to perceiving the energetic layers of reality. This is why I have developed Embodied Energetics.
